Landscape painting was originally a reflection of mankind's character and aspirations, and this remained unchanged over the centuries until the advent of the twentieth century, the century of radical social transformations. From that moment on, Chinese landscape painting entered a phase of profound transformation. New generations of artists worked to merge past and present, East and West. Some drew inspiration from the timeless masterpieces of the Tang, Song and Yuan dynasties to innovate. Others sought to incorporate Western painting techniques based on realism and observation into Chinese painting, breathing new life into the art of ink. The exhibition at the Long Museum West Bund features over 40 landscape works by over 30 of the most influential Chinese painters of the twentieth century.
