The Tale of Tales - The Silver Road in China
#Exhibitions

The exhibition at the Shanghai Museum explores silver in the form of various coins, revealing the importance of this precious metal in the political and social history of the Nation, its vital role in connecting China with the world. An ancient story, starting in the VIII Century B.C., coming all the way up to the famed round coin with a square hole in the centre, which was used right up to 1890. On display, precious ingots, silver tael from the Imperial age, used by the noble class for the most important transactions. But also finely engraved coins, currency from all over the world, which travelled along the Silk Road, by land and by sea, silver coins from Spain and even Mexico, bearing witness to the lively trade within the Nation. The exhibition presents over 130 objects from the collection of the Shanghai Museum, including recent archeological finds from Sichuan.
