The first personal exhibition at the MadeIn di Shanghai Gallery for Zheng Yuan (born in 1988 in Lanzhou in the Region of Gansu; now living and working in Beijing) coincides with the presentation of the last act of the cycle China Northwest Airlines, a composite and varied work for its conceptual basis and the language involved which the artist conceived of over the last three years. Moving along parallels, the work starts with the history of Chinese civil aviation, starting in the 1950s, to then retrace the economic, social and geo-political evolution of China over the last decade, from the period of the open-door policy of the 1980s, up to the Nation’s adhesion to the WTO. China Northwest Airlines is comprised of two new episodes - The Last Step of Touch Down and Then What Have You Done in Your Entire Life?. The focus of the first work is the arrival of political leaders and delegations in a foreign country which coincides with the start of diplomatic relations between the two countries, along with the subsequent technological exchanges. Then What Have You Done in Your Entire Life?, meanwhile, describes the experience of those who benefitted from the new technology introduced in the field of aviation in the 1970s. The entire cycle sums up the major interests of the artist - performance, fiction, essay, using various sources ranging from archival documents to vintage objects and revealing a “meta work”, the applications of which go well beyond history and art.
