It is Cai Zebin’s second monographic exhibition at the Capsule Shanghai, A Revisit at 2 Bis Rue Perrel, is inspired by the work of the surrealist sculptor Victor Brauner from where the exhibition gets its name, and offers a look at the multifaceted creations of the young Chinese artist. Recently produced paintings, small-sized drawings and installations are the visual vehicles for the continued fascination of the artist regarding the relationship between symbolism, imagination and reality. The works on display are the artist’s discoveries in entwining his creativity with his ongoing evolution of his artistic practices. Cai Zebin’s choice of such a specific and suggestive title, shows his precise intention of revealing his methods, as well as the genealogy of the images and the iconographic resources that give life to his work. “How is a work of art created?" This is a cardinal question that guides the work of Cai as much as it guides the spectator’s visit. The latter, finding themselves in front of works of art which are fascinating for their references to art history but also for their original and personal sentiment, can’t help but find this exhibition lively and new.
