Also Shanghai has a Biennale of Art, the longest, most consolidated in China, and this year it inaugurates its Twelfth Edition at the Power Station of Art and other spaces throughout the city as part of the program City Project: Tank Shanghai, Extra Time, Columbia Circle, Sinan Mansions, The Swatch Art Peach Hotel, Biblioteca Miguel de Cervantes de Shanghái. The title chosen by curator Cuauhtémoc Medina (head curator of the University Museum of Con-temporary Art in Mexico City) is Proregress, a combination of the words “progress” and “regress”, a term invented in 1931 by the poet E. E. Cummings. The mission of this edition is to look at art in this era of historic ambivalence - the 67 artists come from all over the world and they discuss the ambiguous nature of our times, marked by significant progress but also significant steps backwards, analysing the role of culture and exploring aesthetics. Among the key works of the exhibition, the video by Belgian artist Francis Alÿs, Rehearsal I (1999-2004), in which a Volkswagen Bug attempts to climb a steep hill, losing energy just before the summit, only to roll back down every time.
