Guided by his mentor Andy Warhol and contemporaries like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring with whom he opened the way for contemporary Street Art, Kenny Scharf creates work that he himself defines as Surrealist Pop, dominated by references to pop culture, cartoon characters like the Flintstones and the Jetsons and anthropomorphic imaginary creatures. With a palette overflowing with bright day-glow colours, Scharf creates a visual experience that fascinates the spectator at first glance - at the same time, his multifaceted approach which embraces painting, sculpture, installations, murals, performance and fashion - reflects his dedication to the creation of dynamic art forms which deconstruct the existing artistic hierarchy, echoing the philosophy of Pop artists and their contamination of tones and genres. An exhibition capable of engaging the spectator and transporting them to a fantastical microcosm, populated by creatures from the collective imagination revisited with wild colours and unbridled optimism.
