VHILS is an urban artist and the city is his means of expression - at the centre of his work are people, the inhabitants. His canvases are walls, the skin of the metropolis, scraped and gouged at to create portraits. The Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto, better known by his nickname VHILS, has been doing this work for years, with a will to humanise urban spaces, continually reflecting on contemporary urban society, on its multiple facets and contradictions, its complexity. On one hand, there is a simple portrait, the story of a single individual and their personality. On the other, there are the materials used, among the most common in the world, such as panels of drywall from construction sites, but also styrofoam and packing materials, and, of course, cement. The work of VHILS highlights the dialogue between humans and their environment, restoring a poetic touch to the urban landscape, as well as the centrality of the individual, often overwhelmed by chaos of city life. On display at the Danysz Gallery, some of the works created in 2017 in Beijing, along with new works conceived right in Shanghai.
