The First Personal of Thomas Demand in China

The First Personal of Thomas Demand in China
#Exhibitions

Photographer and sculptor, Thomas Demand has explored the world of images for years and continues to do so with his first personal exhibition at a Chinese institution. The exhibition proves to be the ideal pretext for reflecting on the value of images in a society which is increasingly hyper-connected and overwhelmed by visual stimuli, but also in offering a glance at the modus operandi of an artist who is totally unique in his genre. Photos on a large scale, shots taken with a smartphone, wallpaper used to give photographic images an architectural dimension and film are the means used by the artist in a personal exhibition in which fact and fiction, truth and artefice are perfectly yet unexpectedly balanced. As often happens in his work, the artist meticulously reconstructs images from various media sources, often well-known historical images or widely-shared images. After having photographed the recreated environments - always free of human figures but often showing traces of their presence - he destroys his models, adding ulterior semantic richness between the rapport between reproduction and original.
