Arts and culture in Denpasar are largely synonymous with Hindu art and culture. Having become the capital of Bali in 1958, replacing the former capital of Singaraja in the North of the island, the city of Denpasar has grown rapidly since then, yet has managed to maintain a small-town feel despite the traffic congestion on its roads. Visiting Denpasar is one of the best ways to experience real Balinese life. The city is home to the Bali Museum, which houses an important collection of traditional and historical artefacts from all over the island: weapons, utensils, precious jewellery, textiles, religious artefacts, traditional costumes and masks, and various works of art are among some of the works on display in the museum. On the eastern outskirts of the city is the Taman Werdhi Budaya or Bali Art's Centre, Bali's main cultural centre. It comprises a large exhibition space, an art museum, a concert hall and an amphitheatre, as well as a performing arts school. Visitors can enjoy dance and music performances in two open-air amphitheatres. The capital is home to numerous Hindu temples. Among the most famous are Pura Agung Jagatnatha (adjacent to the Bali Museum), Pura Maospahit and Puri Agung Pemecutan. The Denpasar Festival is an opportunity to experience the diversity and richness of the city's culture and art.
