The Buddhist Monastery of Brahma Vihara Arama

The Buddhist Monastery of Brahma Vihara Arama
#BulgariStories

Amidst the countless Hindu temples to be found on Bali, there is only one majestic Buddhist monastery on the island, but it absolutely belongs on any to do list of locations to visit. Whether for taking a moment to meditate or to flip through a book in one of its libraries, it’s a pleasure and totally fascinating to wander about the many rooms, discovering this religion and observing the bhiku at prayer in the Dharmasala situated in the eastern part of the complex. Brahma Vihara Arama (literally "place of self-training") is situated in the north of Bali, on Banjar Hill, near Lovina and its principal attraction is considered to be the amazing miniature replica of Borobudur, the largest Buddhist archeological site in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since it opened in 1970, the monastery immediately became a sacred pilgrimage destination for thousands of visitors and the faithful. Within its magic mix of Thailandese and Balinese with coloured decorations, the bright orange roof and statues of Buddha, the temple welcomes its visitors with a pond of flowers, surrounded by local statues, to then accompany them to the steep stairs from which they can enjoy a sensational view of the valley. It is suggested to consult the calendar of events to plan a meditation lesson in the Uposatha Gara room, immersed in the almost surreal tranquility of this mystic temple or watch a procession of Buddhist monks during a holy day, such as Asada or Vesak.
