Folk in Order | Courtesy Macalline Center of Art

Through a selection of 45 works, the exhibition explores popular “folk” artistic production to try to grasp its truest meaning, rediscovering the authenticity of things and memories of ancient times resurrected through contemporary rituals. The main intention is to recognize the artistic potential of those who are not burdened by a search for refinement or a specific discipline. The impulse to create in a society fueled by the people and clearly distinct from the sophisticated knowledge built by elitist and intellectual contexts, could become a new compass that guides people beyond existing orders and discourses. For curator Wang Huan, folk becomes the antidote to modernity, a sort of counter-modernization movement that awakens feelings in bodies trampled by modern progress.
