Despite this exhibition being organised as a monographic show dedicated to the lengthy career of Liu Shaohui, this exhibition goes beyond that of simple praise. The journey of Liu Shaohui is one of the most emblematic cases concerning the development of contemporary Chinese art, an artistic story spanning sixty years and extremely complicated historical periods. Liu Shaohui, with his language, transcended the barriers of time and eliminated the confines between contemporary and popular art, between East and West. Articulated in seven sections, I Was Born Free reveals to the public the incredible voyage of understanding undertaken by the painter, always aiming towards the conquest of total liberty of artistic expression. Seventy works show the experimentation which balanced between the colourful artistic expression of the region he was born in - Sichuan - and a totally updated contemporary language. What emerges is the extraordinary career of an artist capable of interpreting our times without ever betraying his roots, ranging from painting to ink works to animation, while always maintaining an integrity of style, language and values in all his works.
