The Pioneers of Contemporary Art in China: the Group Wuming (No Name)
#Exhibitions

Among the artists who have made an important contribution to the development of contemporary Chinese art, the group Wuming (No Name) stands out for its special attention to everyday life, to gestures and situations with optimistic and personal tones. The members of the Wuming group painted in the open air, taking inspiration from urban or natural landscapes, using a colour palette of cold and warm hues that, in some cases, evoked an impressionistic sensibility. Wunming’s ethics and aesthetics, which were in sharp contrast to the art of Socialist Realism, led them to focus on the dimension of the individual, with all their weaknesses and hopes. In this exhibition, one of the founders of the group, Zhang Wei, works as a curator to highlight new aspects of the work of Zhao Wenliang and Yang Yushu, two of his friends and fellow experimenters. In this case, Zhang focuses on the two artists' ability to use colours and lines in new and dynamic ways
