Matisse by Matisse is an exhibition articulated in ten sections that, following the chronology of the life and career of Henri Matisse, retraces the phases that contributed to creating the artist’s iconic style. The first copies of classics by the masters of antiquity co-exist with the works representative of the move of the artist towards Fauvism, the French artistic movement which advocated the unbiased use of colours, arriving in the 1920s and ‘30s with studies of the human body and portraits using sculptures, sketches and prints. Other sections, meanwhile, show the inspiration from the journey to Tahiti in 1930, as well as the newspaper clippings, book illustrations and textile works of his last years. A special space is dedicated to the artefacts, sketches and models used for the Chapel of Vence, project created when Matisse was almost eighty years old. Another section curated by the team of UCCA investigates the influence of Matisse and Fauvism on the modern Chinese painting from the 1920s to the 1940s.
