#Exhibitions

Born in 1948 in Cape Town, South Africa, Gavin Jantjes left his country in 1966 and in 1970 with a scholarship to study at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg, Germany, where he managed to obtain political asylum. Structured in chapters ranging from 1970 to today, the exhibition To Be Free! recounts the crucial phases of Jantjes' life. Explores his commitment to anti-apartheid activism from the 1970s to the mid-1980s, his transformative role in art institutions in the UK, Germany and Norway, and his compelling figurative representations of the global black struggle for freedom, as well as its recent transition to non-apartheid.
