A Journey Along the Silk Road

A Journey Along the Silk Road
#Exhibitions

The Silk Road was, without a doubt, the most ancient and important trade route between the Orient and the West. Travelled in the 13th Century by Marco Polo, whose chronicled journeys gave life to his text Il Milione, the Silk Road, which connected China and ancient Rome through the Middle East, played, for many centuries, a crucial role in the cultural interaction between regions. Besides just trade goods, among which silk was among the most precious with its secret jealously guarded in China, knowledge, ideas, art and culture travelled in every direction. Silk Road, at the Maraya Art Centre of Sharjah, looks at the Silk Road from an unusual and fascinating perspective, a literary one. The exhibition, created to celebrate Sharjah World Book Capital 2019, presents, in fact, a collection of over 100 titles - books of narrative, illustrated texts, books on general culture, books for children and adolescents, historical and contemporary works, all created by Chinese and international illustrators and authors. Among these is Journey to the West, a Chinese classic published in the XVI Century, and the historical illustrations created by artist and professor of the Academy of Fine Arts of Macerata, Mauro Evangelista.
