The 1980s were a decade of creativity and art expressed itself in many unconventional ways. The 1980s are also remembered as one of the most critical periods in the history of the United Kingdom, driven by the political reforms and transformation of society brought about by the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. This exhibition focuses on a time when, against the backdrop of race riots, miners’ strikes, Section 28, the AIDS pandemic and gentrification, the world was changing. The 1980s are told through the lens of an art form - photography - that was used as a tool for social change, political activism and artistic and photographic experiments. The protagonists of these often invisible stories were photography magazines such as Ten 8 and Cameraworks, but also Autograph ABP, Half Moon Photography Workshop and Hackney Flashers.
