The Personal Exhibition of a Great Master of Contemporary Chinese Art - Xu Bing
#Exhibitions

The iconic and monumental Book from the Sky - an installation presented in Beijing for the first time in 1988 - which gathers together a set of books with 4000 Chinese characters conceived ex-nuovo by the artist and presented as if, in reality, they were traditional characters; Book from the Ground, the results of a continuous experimentation by Xu Bing in the realm of language, in this case, inspired by emoticons and symbols which are part of our daily lives; the installation Monkeys Grasp for the Moon in which the monkey protagonists of the popular Chinese legend who try to capture the Moon, are “depicted” in the form of the word “monkey” itself, created using 21 types of writing, from Chinese to Braille, from Japanese to Hebrew. These are just some of the cardinal works that, for the personal exhibition of the artist, light up the Museum of Art Pudong (MAP). The latter, for its architectural design by Ateliers Jean Nouvel and the grand exhibitions already held there, has become obligatory stop, despite being a new entry in the world of art in Shanghai. The Gravity of Civilization - the Xu Bing’s new large-scale work - will be presented next April.
