The Shanghai School
#Exhibitions

A great moment in painting, retraced by forty works by great masters - at the Long Museum of Pudong, an important exhibition on the “Shanghai School”. A style born during the ascent of the “Pearl of the Orient”, continuing through the dawn of the “Treaty of Nanking”, when Shanghai became an important port for foreign trade in China. From this moment on, it began a long period of expansion, economic prosperity, cultural contamination and artistic vivacity.
Shanghai became one of the top cities for painting, attracting masters from around the country, creating the last great school of painting in the modern history of China, the “Shanghai School”. Through three distinct sections, the exhibition retraces this great period in painting, right up to the birth of realism in the mid-1900s, which ran up to the 1980s. In the Shanghai School, this intense style was articulated in paint and ink in a realistic and modern way - one example is the extraordinary vision from the Bund of the “Rising Sun” by Ying Yeping.
