A streetlight, a traffic cone, a roadwork sign, objects we usually pass without a second glance become the protagonists of Anchorage, Yuan Zhongyu's new exhibition at Vanguard Gallery in Shanghai. Trained in civil engineering and architecture, the Chinese artist looks at the urban landscape from an unexpected perspective, transforming industrial elements into places of stillness and contemplation. His installations merge the language of the city with that of the traditional Chinese garden, creating environments suspended between reality and imagination. Lampshades bloom like trees, decorative windows meet roadside signage, and steel traffic cones become a tranquil "wishing pond," inviting visitors to slow down and notice what usually goes unseen. Rather than offering a permanent refuge, Anchorage suggests a moment of pause - a temporary place to stop before moving on.
