Giovanni Antonio Canal was an Italian artist born in Venice in 1697 and famous for his extraordinary paintings of views and landscapes which earned him great international fame, making him very popular during the eighteenth century. His detailed and accurate depictions of the city's canals, palaces and crowded squares captured the essence of 18th-century Venice and were much appreciated by British and European tourists visiting the Serenissima and, even today, remain some of the most iconic images of the Lagoon city. In the 1740s, Canaletto spent a lot of time in England and this certainly contributed to his international reputation so much so that his works are today preserved in the collections of the most important museums in the world including the National Gallery in London, the Louvre in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This exhibition displays many works by Canaletto, including oil paintings, watercolours, prints, mainly from British collections, including the National Galleries of Scotland and allows viewers to trace the development of the 18th century view genre through the magnificent and detailed portraits of Venice created by this great artist.
