Anonymous figures, unknown identities, faces and bodies captured in their most intimate expressions and in the interaction with the surrounding environment that reveals social belonging. This is how portraits of male figures appear in traditional pictorial works. But where has that genre arrived today? To try to answer this question, You Yang, director of the X Museum, has identified and selected a series of paintings, sculptures, photographs and videos made in recent years by 61 contemporary artists from all over the world and belonging to different generations born between 1950 and 2000. Scenes of life within the domestic walls and the numerous self-portraits represent the attempt to map male identity, today more than ever so vulnerable and bearer of deep internal conflicts.
