Generative AI promises to transform the planet and also transform the way in which artistic research can be expressed through new tools and possibilities that were unimaginable until recently. AI has also had a profound impact on the way we look at images and works of art. The term “apophenia” was coined in 1958 to describe a particular characteristic of schizophrenia: a cognitive tendency to perceive meaningful connections between disparate and unrelated elements. A serious psychological disorder that in some ways can be compared to the “false correlations” that appear as a result of the pattern recognition processes at the heart of generative AI. These aberrant processes are seen here as a fertile starting point for artistic research.
