Sound has long been a subject of interest in the history of the visual arts, but its potential as an artistic medium remains largely unexplored. The expressive capabilities of sound are immense, particularly its natural propagation, its ubiquity and its ability to establish relationships beyond words. At the West Bund Museum, 15 large-scale installations from the Centre Pompidou’s new media collection are exhibited alongside a selection of audiovisual artworks and sound sculptures by Chinese artists. Artists from different eras and regions converge to engage in a dialogue that transcends the boundaries of geography, time and space. They include esteemed international pioneers of contemporary art including Francis Alÿs, Susan Philipsz, Gary Hill and Bill Fontana, alongside younger generations including Hassan Khan, Anne Le Troter, Yuko Mohri, Naama Tsabar and Chinese artists active on the global scene, such as Zhou Tao, Liu Chuang, Tao Hui, Samson Young and many others. The exhibition is one of the events of the 60th Edition of the Festival Croisements, organized by the Institut Français in China.
