Tenganan and Panglipuran - Where Tradition Still Lives

Tenganan and Panglipuran - Where Tradition Still Lives
#BulgariStories

There are places in Bali which deserve to be visited if you want to get to know the local culture first-hand. The villages of Tenganan and Panglipuran have remained uncontaminated - here, history seems to have stopped in its tracks, the laws and social relations are still solidly tied to tradition. Tenganan can be found in the regency of Karangasem. Known for being inhabited by the Bali Aga, the island’s first inhabitants, the village remained isolated until the 1970s and still maintains its traditions and respect for its ancestors. In the village, Gringsing fabric can be found, obtained with a traditional method, as well as other artisan works, such as paintings and carvings on palm leaves Panglipuran, instead, can be found at the foot of Monte Batur, its architecture following the concept of Tri Hita Karana, of a balance between God, humans and the environment. Thus, the inhabitants have been committed to protecting the bamboo forests surrounding the village. Rich with temples, cars may not circulate within the village and the sense of cordiality and hospitality is stunning in this timeless place where it’s simply wonderful to lose yourself.
