A Personal Exhibition that Speaks of the Contemporary Human Condition

A Personal Exhibition that Speaks of the Contemporary Human Condition
#Exhibitions

For over twenty years, artist Geof Oppenheimer has used the languages of sculpture, video, drawing and photography to analyse, not only the way in which people relate to each other, but also how these personal relationships intersect with social and economic issues impacting the human collective. For his first personal exhibition in China, the artist presents new works commissioned by the UCCA and the Diriyah Biennale Foundation - their subjects owing to three archetypal figures, the businessman, the flag-bearer and the observer - situated within an immersive spatial context created by embellishing the walls and floors, using both primary materials and mass-produced materials. These sculptures and their environs are a metaphor for the current situation of the human condition, caught between materialism and the search for something that goes beyond the tangible. The exhibition looks close-up at the artist’s use of the body; the body here being both messenger and message - it speaks of the contemporary human condition, underlining the sense of paradox and uncertainty but also the introspection that individuals live through.
