How does a rock remember? How does a fungus communicate? And what trace does an algorithm leave when it makes a decision? At the Tsinghua University Art Museum, an exhibition invites us to take humanity out of the centre of the picture for a moment and notice what usually escapes our senses. Twelve artists and collectives from nine countries explore forms of life, matter and processes that follow timescales and languages very different from our own. The journey begins with Forms of Time, where time is measured not by a human lifespan but on the immense scale of the Earth. Whisper Language of the Other brings us closer to the ways nonhuman organisms perceive and communicate, while Digital Traces ventures into the invisible territory of data and algorithms. Moving between art, science and technology, the exhibition does not attempt to explain everything. It does something more intriguing: it challenges our ability to see, inviting us to imagine how many worlds exist right in front of us without our ever noticing them.
