Human intervention has inexorably transformed the ecological and climatic systems of the Planet. But what new balances will be able to keep away the dangers that threaten the environment? The title of the exhibition takes up the final verses of the poem that Mao Zedong composed in 1956 the day after his visit to Wuhan and after having embraced the waters of the Yangtze River in three extraordinary swims. “If the goddess Gaia is safe and sound, she will look at the changing world with surprise” wrote the president-poet. The exhibition offers a series of works that come from agriculture, hydraulic engineering, infrastructure and climate control. The image of the Earth as a living being that breathes, capable of self-regulation and equipped with a stable feedback loop has given way to a Planet that is supported by a hybrid ecosystem, half nature half machine, and has become a technological platform, a space continually assembled by living and non-living actors. The question today is: can the Earth, thus transformed, face a new rebirth? The answer is in the exhibition.
