Tarek Atoui works in the world of sound with an innovative approach that challenges and expands the consolidated ways of understanding and experimenting with this medium. For the Lebanese artist and composer, sound is a multi-sensorial experience which relies on various components, not just hearing. Reconnecting to the previous project, Within, the result of years of work with the deaf, in the new project entitled Cycles in 11, which represents over a decade of collaboration with the Sharjah Art Foundation, the artist has developed new ideas for constructing instruments, composing and performing. Tarek Atoui has created unusual instruments, sometimes quite complex mechanisms, which are born from an ongoing study of the history and the traditions of music and of an incessant exploration of the various methods of listening and composing. His work is often the result of collaboration with designers and artisans. Performance is another important element of his work, connected to improvisation and the physical space in which it is executed, an essential part of the event. Cycles in 11 is being hosted in a historical home, Bait Al Serkal, located in one of the oldest parts of Sharjah, transformed into a sonic lab and a performing space.
