Homebound: A Journey in Photography is a journey that retraces the career of artist Aïda Muluneh and, at the same time, transports us to a continent, Africa, showing it to us in a new light. After having left his home country, Ethiopia, at a young age, Muluneh lived in Yemen, England and Cyprus before moving to Washington D.C., where he worked as a photojournalist for the Washington Post. However, during his career, he explored numerous types of photography, from portraits to music videos to commercial photography. In 2007, he returned to Ethiopia where, in 2010, he founded the Addis Photo Fest, a biennial dedicated to photography, the first and only international photo festival in Eastern Africa. His photos evoke Africa, but subvert preconceived images, going against stereotypes, as well as being rife with contradictions. His use of colour is audacious, unconventional. He principally uses primary colours which are at the basis of his cultural roots, adding power to the messages infused in each shot. The exhibition, the first of Aïda Muluneh in Sharjah, is broken down into two sections. One presents a series of works created during his career as an artist and photojournalist, the other is a collection of contemporary African photos which were displayed at or commissioned by the Addis Photo Fest during its decade of life.
