The Badshahnama is the “book of kings”, a splendidly illustrated text that tells of the historic Moghul period (XVII cent.) in ancient Persia, an instrument of propaganda but also an important document regarding a past era. The point of departure for Pakistani artist Imran Channa, is that of selecting portions of this historical work and re-contextualising them to give them new meaning. Through the enlargement of fragments of the text and thanks to shifting or eradicating certain elements while inserting new elements, a new narrative is created. Channa becomes the destroyer of something that existed before him and, at the same time, the creator of something new, creating a dialogue between past and present. A similar reflection on the rapport between art and history can be found in the work of Iranian artist Samira Abbassy, on display at the same time at the XVA Gallery in Dubai. Her approach is different however as Abbassy interprets the theme of crossing water, departing from a dramatic sense of urgency in the present - the flight of Syrian refugees from the war. During the creative process, using a sort of reverse-procedure, Abbassy explores an archetypical dimension of the journey across the water, which also represents a dive into the subconscious.
