Prayers, affirmations and ancient hymns mark a score that projects the public though a work imbued with Egyptian, Hebrew and Sumerian accents. Creating this fascinating atmosphere, the characteristic voice of the American minimalist composer Philip Glass who, joining forces with original choreography, brings the public into an ancient universe. For the occasion, Anthony Roth Costanzo returns to the English National Opera in the lead role, with Rebecca Bottone in the role of Queen Tiy, along with James Cleverton, Colin Judson and Zachary James. The piece begins with the death of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, leading to the coronation ceremony of his son Akhenaton, who made history for having abandoned traditional Egyptian polytheism in favour of a new monotheistic religion. His great love for his wife Nefertiti, the new city built in honour of the new religion and the vision of a whole new society are the major themes throughout the drama. The music intertwines with the dramatic contexts, while the melodic language, highly varied, confers the notes themselves with theatricality and an almost romantic quality. Directed by Phelim McDermott, with costumes by Kevin Pollard, the production is ready to amaze audiences at the ENO after its extraordinary success in 2016.
