For her first monographic in the United Kingdom, Zhou Li brings some large-scale paintings to Bermondsey, all part of two new series of works. The title of the exhibition, Original State of Mind, refers to the spirit of Zhou Li when she creates her works. During her work, the artist seeks to explore the relationship between herself and what is around her. “The way that people normally see the world,” she explains, “is as if through a window, from the inside to the outside, but I try to stay between the two. I see myself from a neutral point of view and I see the world from a neutral point of view at the same time.” Attempting to place herself, in her abstract paintings, outside the normal parameters of perception, trying to enter a world without obstacles to observation and comprehension, Zhou Li considers herself and the objects that surround her of equal importance for her art, indivisible. When she paints, she says she imagines the subject communicating with her through the painting. It could be herself, another person or an event or simply an emotion provoked by a social or political event. Her abstract works can be considered to be in dialogue with contemporary Western art, particularly with the paintings of Mark Rothko or Cy Twombly. Suggesting a sense of flow and movement that reflects the troubled introspection of the artist that lives and works in Shenzhen, the work of Zhou Li explores the relations of emotions with perception and the fusion between logic and irrationality within human consciousness, elements that are at the centre of ancient Chinese philosophy.
