“Establishing an annual exhibition, open to all artists of worth” to finance the education of young artists in the schools of the Royal Academy. Born from this imperative, in 1769, the Summer Exhibition which, since then, has never missed an edition, even during wartime. However, this year, because of the pandemic, for the first time in 250 years, the event will be moved to Winter but will, once again, highlight artists with works involving themes such as immigration and borders, the ecological threat and the landscape in the form of installations, paintings, film, sculpture and photography. Because of the exceptional circumstances, most of the preparation for this unique platform, which consents emerging talents and affirmed talents alike to present their works to an international public, will take place virtually. The big news this year? The introduction of “invisible walls” in one of the gallery’s spaces, with supports suspended from the ceiling, adding yet another dimension to this remarkable event.
