The foyer of Teatro degli Arcimboldi gets a make-over and transforms into a home for Graffiti Artists for a journey among the greatest national and international names on the scene, from Bansky to Blu, from Phase 2 to Serena Maisto. Loved or demonised, poetic or ruthlessly cutting, Street Art wanders across walls, scrapped train cars and storefront security gates, often a scathing reflection of the present. Tracing its history and depicting its protagonists with around one-hundred works is the exhibition UNKNOWN - Street Art Exibition which, for its first time in Italy, has chosen Teatro degli Arcimboldi. The undisputed star of the exhibition is Banksy, starting with the iconic Girl with Balloon, the famed little girl with the wind-blown hair who has just had her heart-shaped balloon slip out of her hand, evoking the fragility and the ephemeral quality of human sentiment and affection. The graffiti mice, bearing messages of peace and love, meet the chimpanzees, while in Rage, Flower Thrower, we find that celebrated character with his partially-covered face about to toss a bouquet of flowers rather than a grenade. Among the eighteen pieces by BLU - another “unknown” artist, who it is said lives in a camper on the outskirts of Rome - there is the pen on paper work Fish ‘n Trips, the print Headquarters and the mural created on the northern facade of the National Theatre of Brittany. Among the other great street art talents are Phase 2, Delta 2, BenEine, 3D, Bordalo II, the Portoghese artist who uses garbage to create depictions of wildlife, often victims of our pollution. Among the better-known female street artists are the American artist Swoon, the South African Faith 47 and Swiss-born Serena Maisto (IMAGO Art Gallery).
