The Romantic Landscapes of Mamma Andersson

The Romantic Landscapes of Mamma Andersson
#Art

For a woman born a few miles from the Arctic Circle, Anna Karin Andersson - better known to the general public by the nickname Mamma Andersson - is a contemporary Swedish painter who is anything but glacial. Her work, almost always figurative, often depicts domestic interiors, tranquil snowy landscapes with a calm and dreamlike style where the pictorial space evokes the idea of theatrical representation. In a sense Mamma Andersson's works embody a new genre of landscape painting reminiscent of late 19th century Romanticism while also embracing a contemporary interest in layered and complex psychological compositions. The exhibition that arrives in Paris at the David Zwirner gallery follows an important monographic show that was dedicated to her in 2021 by the prestigious contemporary art museum Louisiana Museum which is located a few kilometers from Copenhagen and heralds an equally important exhibition that will be dedicated to her at the Museum MORE in the Netherlands in November 2023.
