In the series of works on display at the Vanguard Galler, gathered together under the title of Normal Temperature, Jin Haofan explores the limits of normalcy. A subjective concept which is part of our daily lives. In these works, the artist gradually abandoned his “comfort zone”, seeking out a new method for measuring reality, pushing himself beyond the limits of his own sense of normalcy. In the work from which the exhibition gets its name, Normal Temperature, Jin Haofan depicts a seemingly limitless number of stones - placing totally similar depictions next to each other, distinctive only by minuscule differences, the artist downplays his obsession for narrative and softens the functionality of the images. He underlines what normalcy really is, by definition, synonymous with adaptation, the liberty to modify things. In the series Container, objects shaped like pans, waiting to be filled, are shown close-up, immersed in a surreal atmosphere which emits a disturbing sort of agitation. The art of Jin Haofan is capable of expressing the highs and lows of perception and the precariousness of reality, exploring the invisible confines of life within the rhythms of the “normal”.
