The New Baroque According to Chen Fei

The New Baroque According to Chen Fei
#Exhibitions

A red carpet that covers the entire exhibition area and the white walls embellished by decorations in stucco upon which contemporary still lifes are hung, greet spectators at the exhibition Morning Market, the latest exhibition of Chen Fei. The “museum within a museum” created by the artist is animated by figurative compositions, opulent, both for their colours and the vast number of subjects depicted, together offering a distinctly Baroque feel - from a selection of typical Chinese snacks on a background of gold leaf (Staple Food), to anthropomorphic vegetables depicted with sad expressions (Unsatisfied), and, finally, After Party, an acrylic work on canvas of enormous dimensions that features the skeletons of various animals, placed on a laboratory table in a composition that recalls The Last Supper. This last work represents the anxieties and worries that the artist dealt with over the last year, offsetting the usual irony, levity and humour of many of Chen’s works, including the others in this exhibition.
