The Code of Physiognomy, the monographic exhibition of Wang Xingwei (born in 1969), hosted in the beating heart of the Art District, present the main body of painted works by the artist, beginning with works from the last exhibition in 2016. The dominant aspect of the work of Wang Xingwei has always been sculptural art as the intrinsic structure behind pictorial language and its form. Over recent years, the production of Xingwei has focused on hyper-detailed images and figures. A multitude of particulars that delineate a universe inhabited by various portraits, rife with symbols and metaphors which allude to the title of the exhibition, offering universal questions - Are we capable of deciphering the code? Do we accept the challenge of trying to unlock the myth behind every face? The implicit tension in the work of Wang is underscored by the constant desire for a sort of classic, timeless quality expressed in perfectly balanced, harmonious works, characterised by virtuoso compositions and audacious and visually fascinating chromatic juxtapositions.
