Shamanic Rites for Understanding the Present

Shamanic Rites for Understanding the Present
#Art

The premier of the The Northeast Tetralogy, a film project produced over the last four years by Wang Tuo, is at the nerve centre of the first personal exhibition of the artist in an institutional space in China. This cinematic work is born from an in-depth field study by the artist on the history and practice of shamanic rituals. Reflecting on the history of Northeast Asia and the relationship with modernisation in this specific area, the artist proposes the idea of “pan-shamanisation”, a process in which bodies, entering into a subconscious state, become mediums allowing for historical reincarnation. The artist, thus, plays at deconstructing the past and offering alternative and speculative visions through narratives which intertwine and plots following unprecedented logic. Besides this new work, earlier videos round out an exhibition that pays homage to the ingenuity and vitality of one of the most promising Chinese artists whose expressive strongpoints are video and painting.
