The photos of Halim Al Karim are strategically out of focus or otherwise altered, prints sometimes covered by a subtle veil of silk, white or black, making the image even more undefined and impalpable. The closer you get, the more the outlines and details fog over. Exiles in Hidden Worlds, title of the personal exhibition of the Iraqi artist, hosted in the courtyard of the XVA Gallery, evokes a dramatic experience that shaped him profoundly. His refusal to enlist under the regime of Saddam, ended in his having to hide out in a ravine in the desert for three years. A forced exile through which he was aided by a Bedouin woman who brought him food and water, teaching him the customs of the nomads and mystical teachings as well. "That period of horror separated me from reality, it forced me to find secret imaginary passages in which to find refuge by escaping into hidden worlds." Making his photos out of focus for Al Karim is a way of de-contextualising them, making them universal, pushing a vision beyond what is possible to see with the naked eye. Interior worlds, invisible, that time outside time, in which he lived and, thanks to which, he survived, are incarnated in these images that contain the limits of pure observation and recall visions and dreams.
