With the series To My Brother, Taysir Batniji won the 2012 Art Group Abraaj Prize. Today, these works are on display in Dubai in one of the Artist’s Rooms of the Jameel Arts Centre. Through these pieces, the Palestinian artist explores loss and memory, remembering and paying homage to his brother who died in 1987 during the First Intifada. Taysir Batniji was born in 1966 in Gaza, he studied at the National University of Al-Najah in Nablus, in Palestine, continuing his artistic studies in France. His work is multimedia and moves from drawing to photography, from video to installations and even performance pieces. He has always drawn inspiration from his personal life, but also from his native land, these micro and macro histories inevitably intertwine. The 60 drawings on display are based on family photos taken during his brother’s wedding in 1985. Intimate drawings that, from a distance, even seem like white paper, but up close reveal a personal story and the poetic approach with which the artist looks at reality, even when summoning pain and absence.
