When she was called by the Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai to create a work to display in the courtyard of the Art Centre, the Emirate artist Shaikha Al Mazrou began by considering the space in which her work would be placed. From the contraposition between interior and exterior space, between natural and artificial, a large-scale installation was born, comprised of six glass structures, which remind one of greenhouses. For each one, she used a different tone of green, which goes from dark to light, in such a way that the colour substitutes and, at the same time, makes one think of the absence of plants in the greenhouses. Interested in art history and a staunch supporter of education, herself teaching sculpture at the University of Sharjah, Shaikha Al Mazrou’s work begins with the movements of the past, Modernism, the Bauhaus, Minimalism and conceptual art, and from artists like László Moholy-Nagy, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, reinterpreting them in a contemporary key. Dichotomy, experimentation with physical space and the involvement of the spectator were also the main elements of her very first personal exhibition at the Lawrie Shabibi Gallery last November, where the artist displayed works in steel elaborated and coloured in such a way that they transmitted a sense of softness and fragility, because Shaikha Al Mazrou, more than “telling”, wants to challenge perceptions.
