Warrior, sage, head of a vast empire, Ashurbanipal of Assyria was one of antiquities most powerful men - “King of the World” as he was defined by the inscriptions on the buildings of Niniveh. Until 1840, his story was buried below the sands of the desert, but then the discovery of the Assyrian capital in modern-day Iraq allowed for the reconstruction of this figure with few equals. And the wonders of mysterious Niniveh itself will guide visitors through the exhibition of the British Museum, including rare works on loan and masterpieces from the exceptional resident collection. Statues and bas-reliefs evoke the splendour of the Royal Palace, with its sumptuous furnishings and exotic gardens, not to mention the great library created by the sovereign himself - the first in the world which aspired to gather all the knowledge of the known universe under one roof. From lion hunting to strategic and diplomatic abilities, the various aspects of the king who dominated the ancient world from the Mediterranean to the mountains of Iran take shape - ruthless against his enemies, yet refined and sagacious within his reign.
