Not just men and women, but a rainbow of genders almost as varied as humanity itself. More than 30 international artists take on the issue at the Hayward Gallery, in a confrontation between generations, languages, ways of being and communicating. One-hundred works offer a journey through the artistic production regarding the theme over the last 50 years, with paintings, installations, videos, sculptures, drawings and performances. There are those who play with masks and costumes, those who see the human body as a statue to sculpt in seeking new forms of beauty and those who declinate gender variations through the photographic portrait, utilising a myriad of techniques. The common denominator is the study of identity and how to represent it. Gay, drag, trans, intersexual are all categories of no importance - the real challenge is to describe the vastness of the fluidity itself. A kaleidoscope of visions invades the Southbank Center, bursting out of the gallery spaces themselves - Argentinian Ad Minoliti, for example, transforms the Riverside Stage and the roof of the Royal Festival Hall with geometric patterns and flags, while South African Athi-Patra Ruga uses his avatars to invent coloured-glass windows for the foyer and the Queen Elizabeth Hall. All of these are waiting to be discovered, along with other site-specific projects, like the video-installation by the young Jenkin van Zyl and the large mural by Chitra Ganesh.
