The splendour of the Elizabethan Age takes the stage with the art that best represents it - miniatures by the two greatest masters of the craft at the National Portrait Gallery. Admired by the Courts of all of Europe, Nicholas Hilliard and Isaac Oliver were capable of narrating the identity and visual culture of an Era with minuscule pocket-sized portraits, each bounded with its own remarkable frame. “In the works of Hilliard”, wrote historian Ellis Waterhouse, “as in no other artistic form, can one see the very reflection of the first works of Shakespeare alive and well.” From large museums and private collections, both in Great Britain and abroad, come this collection of painted jewels - memorable portraits of Elizabeth I flank images of James I, his wife Anne of Denmark and their sons Henry, Elizabeth and Charles (who later became King Charles I). Completing this view of a golden moment in British history are legendary figures like Sir Walter Raleigh (navigator, privateer and poet, as well as a favourite of the Queen) and Sir Francis Drake, the privateer that circumnavigated the globe on the orders of Her Majesty, as well as contributing to the British victory against the invincible Armada of Philip II of Spain.
