Gerhard Richter, Leone d'Oro at the 47th Venice Biennial and one of the world’s most influential contemporary artists, returns to London ten years after the grand exhibition at the Tate with an interesting exhibition at the Hayward Gallery dedicated to his drawings on paper. This new event in London is an opportunity to get an in-depth look at one of the more important aspects of Richter’s artistic output with over sixty works created between 1999 and 2021. A series of pictorial works created with coloured inks, where the fluidity and unpredictability of the inkwell - in some cases spilling onto the edges of the paper itself - are counterbalanced and anchored by the structures of graphic lines and contrasting forms of organic abstraction. Ink played an important role in the development of Richter’s art during his sixty years of work, starting with his first works with the Elbe monotypes of 1957. The exhibition also looks at other forms of experimentation, such as a series of painted photos in which the instant shots are obscured by a strata of paint. Richter began painting on photos in the mid-80s, creating hybrid works that combine the tactile material nature of painting with the smooth surfaces of photos.
