The revelation, the passion and life after death. The Museo Diocesano hosts a body of masterpieces by French artists living between the XIX and XX Centuries belonging to the contemporary art collection of the Vatican Museums. The exhibition looks at religious themes with a modern look, reinterpreting the codes of religious art itself. On display, more than 20 works by artists such as Paul Gauguin and Auguste Rodin, Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse, offering a unique look at some of the most heartfelt themes of Christianity, such as the Annunciation, the Passion, the Death and the Resurrection of Christ. The entire exhibition seems to carry the invisible message that human suffering can be confronted with a vision towards a higher end, a spiritual one. The vision that the artists give to these crucial moments is subdivided into four thematic environs. They narrate, using oil paints, water colours, gouache and lithography, the intimacy between mother and son, the drama of the martyrdom, the trial of crucifixion and the moment of Resurrection, celebrated, for instance, in the giant triptych by George Desvallières, in his particular depiction of the cloth with which Christ’s face was wiped during the Via Crucis.
A Jewel of the Sixteenth Century, the Casa degli Omenoni
Treasures by Leonardo, Tiziano and Correggio shone bright in the residence of the sculptor and collector Leone Leoni. Today, eight important statues offer a taste of the grandeur of this home, just a few steps away from the Duomo.
