Not just stunning gold works from the Middle Ages, but a veritable tour through the history of gold and its connection with figurative art - thus comes the exhibition at Palazzo Cicogna, the result of the wizened experience of Milanese gallery owner Matteo Salamon. From Giotto to Lucio Fontana and beyond, the precious metal par excellence shows all its versatility. At the heart of the project, a typically Italian handicraft that, from the book of the 1400s Libro dell'Arte by Cennino Cennini, still shines on in the work of contemporary artists. Along with style, the significant attributes of gold also change - once relegated to religious works, today it has moved beyond this realm because, as designer Maurizio Bottoni writes, “All of creation is divine.” So, next to highly refined religious scenes of Giovanni and Taddeo Gaddi, the Master of the Coronation of Oxford, Mariotto di Nardo, Ventura di Moro, Giovanni Antonio da Pesaro, we also find a Concetto Spaziale by Fontana in 1960, as well as the ironic and eclectic works of Paolo Londero. Among the works not to be missed, his sculpture The Goose with the Golden Eggs and the work on wood Oggi Riposo by Bottoni, a comic re-working of the Vanitas with a surrealist edge.
