The architectural and hydraulic drawings of Leonardo, created while the Master was in France from 1516 to 1518, are traditionally placed with the plans by the King of France, Francis I, for a new royal residence in Romorantin. In designing the new home of the King, the artist imagined two twin palaces, one for the King and the other for Queen Claude, placed amidst canals and pavilions. And while Leonardo’s plan may not have been followed through on, the Castle of Chambord, built starting in 1519, seems to transmit some of Leonardo’s ideas for Romorantin. Through a selection of 23 pages from the Codex Atlanticus, dated to the artist’s stay in France, the exhibition explores the final years of the Master’s work.
